Automate spot crypto on Coinbase, and watch your dust

Coinbase through TradersPost is spot crypto only. Two settings decide most surprises: the default quote currency, and how leftover balances count against your position limit.

Small balances still count as positions

If leftover balances are above Coinbase's minimum tradable size, which is usually around 1.50 USD of crypto or more, TradersPost counts each one as an open position. A new entry can then be rejected even though you only meant to hold one coin.

Wallets in the account Example

  • The coin you meant to hold Above the minimum tradable size Counted
  • Leftover balance Above the minimum tradable size Counted
  • Another leftover balance Above the minimum tradable size Counted

Max strategy positions

New entryBuy one more coin Rejected

Max strategy positions limits how many positions you hold. It is not a cap on the size of any one position, and it is enforced on a best-effort basis. If entries are being rejected, look at the wallets already in the account first.

Pick a default quote currency

The currency you choose when you set up the connection is used whenever TradersPost has to close or exit a position.

Quote currencies

  • USD fallback
  • USDC
  • USDT selected
  • DAI
  • GBP
  • EUR

If nothing is selected, or the coin has no market in your chosen currency, it falls back to USD. With USDT selected, for example, a STORJ position is sold in USD because there is no STORJ-USDT market.

Coinbase: 6 things that work differently

  • Orders Exits are separate signals

Coinbase takes simple orders only, so take profit and stop loss cannot be attached to the entry. Send the entry first, then send a separate signal later to exit for take profit or stop loss.

Order classes (opens in a new tab)
  • Orders No trailing stops

Coinbase does not offer trailing stop orders.

  • Account No paper trading

Coinbase has no paper mode on TradersPost. Rehearse a strategy on the TradersPost paper broker first, or start with small live sizes.

  • Orders Limit orders are maker only

Every Coinbase limit order is sent as post only good till canceled. A limit price that would fill straight away against the book is rejected instead of executing.

  • Orders The time in force on the signal is ignored

Market orders go out immediate or cancel and limit and stop limit orders go out good till canceled, whatever time in force the signal asks for.

  • Orders Stop limit is the only stop

Coinbase accepts market, limit and stop limit orders. A stop loss must carry a limit price.
